Anyone living in the Chicago area understands the challenges great schools like Lane Tech are encountering due to political dysfunction and economic hardship. Every year, the budget cuts become more extreme, school schedules more precarious, and the ability to really teach, more daunting. Yet the dedicated faculty and administration continue to find new ways to move the ball forward.
According to U.S. News Best High Schools Report and many other publications, Lane Tech continues to rank as one of the best high schools in the city, state, and nation. As a result of Lane’s consistently outstanding reputation and selective enrollment status, we are able to attract the most diverse and talented students in the city. So it is important we also attract and retain outstanding teachers who are able to engage, inspire, and challenge Lane students to work to their full potential.
Innovative teachers accomplish this through introduction of new programs, classes, clubs, equipment, materials, instructional methods, and/or motivational strategies. Sometimes, innovative teachers simply make improvements to existing ideas. CPS’ unofficial motto is “It’s all about the students,” but to be all about the students, we also need to be about the teachers.
Each year the LTAA supports teachers by inviting them to apply for a Faculty Innovation Grant. For our grants to make the most difference, committee members select teacher proposals whose programs represent an innovative vision, directly engage students, and impact as many students as possible. Since the inception of the program in 2010, the Faculty Innovation Grant Program has awarded nearly a quarter of a million dollars and touched, in some way, every student attending Lane Tech.
As an alumnus, you can play a big role in making this program a success and in doing so, help students get beyond what the school system can provide. Click on the link below to see where our grants have made an impact:
