As Treasurer for the past six years, my focus has been on expanding alumni outreach events and raising funds for the organization. In my new role, among other things, I will be concentrating on expanding the reach of our organization to alumni worldwide through the Internet. We are working on improvements to our website (www.lanetechalumni.org) and will be increasing our coverage of current Lane events (sports, music, student awards) as well as alumni news on a more timely basis. We will be using social media websites like Facebook to coordinate events (fundraisers, class reunions, golf outings) and encourage you to become a fan (Lane Tech Alumni Association). We will continue to send you your newsletter in paper form, unless you opt to get it only as an e-mail. Receiving the newsletter by email only will allow us to reduce our operating costs and increase the monies we donate to Lane Tech.
As we enter into this new decade, along with trying to improve our communications with you, we will be increasing the scope of our mission at Lane Tech. Since our inception in 1985, our focus has been on providing scholarships to graduating seniors, and over the years we have awarded over $773,450 to 171 students. While we are proud of these accomplishments, our goal is to increase the number of students that we serve. Through the efforts of our Grant Proposal Committee, headed up by (parent and new board member) Michelle Weiner (’76), we will be awarding grants to teachers and faculty members starting in February of this year. These grants will be used by teachers to fund projects within departments ranging from Math, Physics and Chemistry to Drama, Music, Foreign Languages and Special Ed. We look forward to helping fund programs that benefit current students. Look for a more detailed article on the Grant Program in the next newsletter.
Our ability to fund these programs, comes partially from annual fundraisers, but is also made possible through the generous support of alumni throughout the year. We were overwhelmed by the response to our end of the year letter and want to thank everyone who sent a donation. In these tough economic times we are well aware of the competition for your hard earned dollars and appreciate your contributions.
I want to thank and recognize my fellow officers for the next two years: Kim Kidd ('73), Michelle Weiner ('76) and George Heyman ('66). A list of our board meeting dates is posted in the newsletter and I invite you to come and observe a meeting. The board is always open to new members and ideas.
I look forward to serving you and hope to meet you at one of our events.
Stuart Eng (’85)
